Requests for Internal Center Support

Center for KINETIC Plasma Physics Internal Support Proposals

One goal of the Center for KINETIC Plasma Physics is to develop new skills and capabilities for members of the Center to become more competitive for further external funding. One way this is accomplished is through financial support of such activities.

The following addresses questions about applying for support:

  • Who can apply?
    • Any faculty member of the Center for KINETIC Plasma Physics can apply. Students and postdocs under the Center umbrella may apply but should have a faculty sponsor that is an official member of the Center. For collaborative project seed funding, any faculty member at WVU can apply, though collaboration with a Center member is required.
  • What activities are supported?
    • Examples of activities that could be funded through the Center include: seed funding for new research projects in collaboration with Center scientists, summer research experiences for undergraduate (REU), hosting meetings or workshops, and support for visiting scientists. This list are merely examples; other ideas are encouraged.
  • When are applications due?
    • Requests for support can be submitted at any time. Please note that it takes time to review proposals, so leave ample lead time for requests on time sensitive activities.
  • How do I apply?

Proposals for activities requesting $10,000 or less will be reviewed by the Center Director and Associate Director. Proposals exceeding this amount will be reviewed by the Center’s Scientific Steering Committee, a panel consisting of Center Members and outside, independent plasma physics experts.

The merit review criteria for proposals are:

  1. Is the proposed activity realistic and achievable?
  2. Are the requested funds appropriate for the proposed activities and represent a reasonable use of funds available to the center?
  3. Does the proposed activity support goals of the Center for KINETIC Plasma Physics?

The proposal application asks for the following information:

  1. Name and email address of proposer
  2. Name and affiliations of others involved, if appropriate
  3. Proposed activity (if seed funding for a research project, include information about the basic science question, the proposed research activities, the feasibility of the project, and the deliverables)
  4. Statement of how the proposed activity supports goals of the Center for KINETIC Plasma Physics
  5. Proposed timeline for the activity
  6. Requested funds
Please contact the Center Director and/or Associate Director with questions. It is encouraged to discuss the request with them before submission. They can also help with questions about the amount of funding available and the expected detail/length of proposals.
